Frascati Apartment Building and Theater
1930’ Calea Victoriei 33

Defined by a long, perfectly symmetrical facade, the Frascati building hosts today the Constantin Tănase Variety Theater. Flanked by ‘famous’, signature neighbors (a building away from Capitol Hotel, architect Arghir CULINA, and Palatul Telefoanelor – The Phone Company Building, architects Edmond Algi Van SAANEN, Walter FROY şi Louis WEEKS), the Frascati building keeps the high standard with a plaz on volumes sustained by the three bow-windows. The three bow-windows are vertical presences, two of them having cassetted cantilevered supports, and the one set in the symmetry axis having a crown molding composed of two levels of cleansed attached pilasters. All the bow-windows show progressive set backs, according to an Art Deco vocabulary, that otherwise defines the entire facade composition.
We can deduce the fact that Jean MONDA himself was satsified by the artistic quality of this building, through the fact that in the ‘30s he lived in it (according to the 1937 phone book). With the coming of the communist regime, Jean MONDA was, most likely, compelled to give up his residence.
